Quaint, Cozy & Charming & A View Like No Other!

By Michaelynn Vandiver

Over the years Pacific Edge Eco Lodge has hosted thousands of travelers from around the world. Long gone are the the days of no internet, water or electricity in this area. Yet even so, back then, it used to attract a very specific kind of traveler that craved a more off-the-beaten path, unplugged kind of experience. With social media these days and an easier access to this part of the country, progress was inevitable once the “secret” of this beautiful area was out. There is a lot of growth now happening in the area and with that, we are now getting all sorts of travelers and tourists heading down towards this region. It’s absolutely wonderful to be able to share our little slice of heaven with even more of you than the previous owners had done for so many years before. But now with it being easier to get to this area of the country, not all travelers needs are quite the same.

Of course with progress, comes all kinds of changes and even more so recently. Many luxury branded homes & boutique hotels are being built in the Southern Zone. Our very own mountain is now considered the “Hollywood Hills” of Costa Rica, yet we have meticulously maintained our originality, as we always have been since being built back in 1989. Pacific Edge was one of, if not the first home/retreat built on this mountainside over 30 years ago. The road, Calle Pacific Edge, is named after the original owners as they built it themselves. So yes, this is a very special place indeed. Her history alone, is rather intriguing. We’d love to share the stories with you when you stay with us. Plus the view is better than anywhere else on this mountain. So that in itself, is also a reason to come and stay with us. We can most certainly promise the view will not disappoint.

With all the changes to the area, there are even more travelers with discriminating taste and a certain expectation of what their vacation might look like. This area is now attracting travelers from all walks of life whom are still accustomed to most modern conveniences, yet still hoping to catch a little bit of the “magic” that Costa Rica has to offer.  There are options of $10/ night hostels to $2000/night mansions and then there is us, Pacific Edge.

So with all of the growth going on, we felt the need to explain a little more about who and what we are in order to attract more likeminded travelers that are still looking for that authentic, rustic Costa Rican getaway, just as the many travelers that have stayed here before them.

Who And What We Are:

We are located Dominicalito in the Southern Pacific Zone of Costa Rica. We are 1.2km (0.8 mile) up the mountain road at an elevation of around 200 meters (650 ft). We are built on a natural mountain ridge overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Dominicalito Bay to be exact, while nestled inside a beautiful jungle vista.

On the property, we have our own home that we live in year round, 3 rescue dogs & 4 inside cats, along with 4 rustic, wooden cabinas built alongside the mountain ridge. So yes, we are here to greet you upon arrival, answer any questions about the area, help book excursions, & make breakfast for you every morning, if you so choose.

Each Cabina boasts the same stunning views of both ocean and jungle. Inside each wooden cabin we have added a touch of modern furnishings, but the beautiful purple-heart wood, locally called Nazareno, is still as beautiful as the day they were built. We believe they are perfect in every way but we are still updating when necessary as the elements and age require us to do so. We did not want to drastically change the design and charm of each cabin as this is what our guests, including ourselves have grown to love. They built these cabins by hand with their blood, sweat and possibly a few tears. They used hand drills and saws with no electricity or running water at the time. Fortunately, we do now have electricity and hot water showers. Our water is sourced from a natural spring about a kilometer up the mountain. It is then filtered thru a 3-stage filtration system & is drinkable and tastes great.  We are an open aired concept with screened in windows along with privacy curtains, if needed. We are a very tranquil and private place to be, so leaving them open is perfectly safe. We also have ceiling fans and floor fans added for the hotter months of travel and high speed internet for those of you that can’t go without and/or need to work remotely.

Each cabin has a small kitchen with most utensils, pots, and pans that one might need to cook a meal. There’s an induction cooktop, toaster oven, and coffee pot, as well as complimentary coffee & sugar.

We have supplied each cabin with new handmade wooden beds, new mattresses, linens, pillows & towels. We try to replace any items that need it, as the humidity & ocean air can wreak havoc on things year after year.  But rest assured everything is washed and cleaned after every single guest departs. I too have my standards and I won’t stray from maintaining them during your visit.

Although the cabins are 30+ years old,  we want the accommodations to be of high standards, while still maintaining the relaxed jungle vibe and allowing you to have a truly unique experience during your stay with us. With that being said, we are in the jungle.  There are insects, geckos, and lots of sounds that you’ll see and hear. We do not use any poisons on the property, so as to protect and maintain the natural flora and fauna. We do use natural oils & sprays that deter insects. So from time to time, you may see a random beetle or gecko roaming in your room or on the front porch. Kindly move them out of your way, or call us. There is also no hum from an air conditioner, so you will hear geckos and frogs chirp, howler monkeys howl in the early mornings and likely, the white-faced Capuchin monkeys throwing seeds down on the roof tops after feasting on berries from one of our many different fruiting trees.

We do like to consider Pacific Edge as an authentic Costa Rican experience, as there are not many places left like this one in the jungle. Most places have been gutted and turned into a high end luxury room with ALL the modern conveniences of a 5 star hotel, which is perfectly wonderful for those seeking that sort of vacation, yet this is something that we are NOT. Quaint, cozy and charming with endless majestic views is who we truly are.

In the almost 3 years of our purchasing PE and reopening, we have maintained a rather high review status for those seeking an experience such as ours. The view is breathtaking and I honestly don’t know another place like us. We do pride ourselves on making your stay a memorable one, but we also want to make sure you know exactly what we are and what we are not so that your expectations are in line with what we strive to be. So please keep that in mind when you are booking your stay with us. We are an older hotel but extremely well maintained and pride ourselves on great service. We want you to feel as though you’ve come to visit old friends. And hopefully by the end of your stay with us, we hope you feel that way! Definitely a magical place to Simply Be.

What we are NOT:

Just in case you missed it, we are not a 5 star luxury hotel or typical boutique hotel. We do not offer daily turn down service (we do change out towels and linens on the 4th day or when kindly asked to do so) and we do not leave chocolates on your pillows, (even though I would LOVE to do that but they would certainly melt and possibly attract ants on your pillow!) We do not have air conditioning in the cabins, as most days the fresh mountain breeze is more than enough. Yet, there are some days the humidity and heat, although expected in this area of Costa Rica, can be a bit much. Luckily we do have a pool for cooling off and fans a plenty in each room.

If what you are seeking is something newer with all the bells and whistles of a 5-star all-inclusive hotel, then we are not the right fit for you. Maybe our condo at Villa Pacifica might be a much better fit! It too has ocean views, toucans & monkeys but it also has a lot of modern amenities PLUS air conditioning. Villa Pacifica is only 3 minutes down the mountain from us AND you are still welcome to join us here for breakfast, just let us know in advance.

We do understand that we are not a place for everyone and with only 4 cabins, that is absolutely fine with us. We want each one of our guests to be happy with their stay and knowing what to expect before your arrival is ideal when planing your vacation. Our cabins are supplied with very nice furnishings and the basic necessities that one might need, rather than full service luxury. For most of our guests, what we offer is exactly what they are seeking and we love providing that for them.

Regardless if you choose to stay here with us here at Pacific Edge, our condo at Villa Pacifica or to stay somewhere else close by, we know that there is something for everyone in this incredibly beautiful country. The area is growing by leaps and bounds. A little too fast at times for those of us who prefer the slower paced life of what the Southern Zone once was. But with that being said, Costa Rica is still an absolutely magical place to travel to and you will enjoy some of the most spectacular nature on earth!  We sincerely hope that you will give us a try and most importantly, love Pacific Edge as much as we do and have for many years when we were guests ourselves! Most people rave about how special of a place Pacific Edge is and we are sure you will too! Pacific Edge is one of the last rare gems these days and the perfect escape from the “regular fast-paced world”. It’s a truly authentic experience you most definitely won’t find anywhere else.

Whew! It has been a very hot summer!

Yep I said it, its been darn hot this year. Hotter than any other time that I can remember myself. So when traveling or booking your trip to Costa Rica, please make sure to do your research before hand and know the time of the year that you are visiting might be hotter than you are used to! Plan accordingly and you should be fine!

Being an ocean / island girl for all of my life, I am pretty used to the hot and the humidity but this past December – March even a bit through April this year, has been way hotter than any past years, that I have been coming here. Of course, this is the time of year that everyone wants to travel here, to escape the cold winter months you all have back home. I get it, truly as I hate the cold but please know that we are not (I wish I was) in control of this weather system and please don’t write a review blaming us for you being too hot. Lol (Yes it has happened once. 😬 )

Being 700ft up the mountain, it is for sure cooler than down on the beaches, so that is an absolute plus! We usually have really wonderful mountain air breezes blowing up through the yard and into the cabins. Although the summer days may be hot, the nights are usually very comfortable with just a ceiling fan turned on. With that being said, we do recommend you keep the windows open (they are screened) and turn on the ceiling fans and/ or floor fans for extra comfort throughout the day (if you choose to stay here) and during the night as you sleep. Of course, most people are off hiking, snorkeling, hanging out the beach or off on other fun excursions during the mornings and afternoon anyway, so please make sure to dress appropriately and comfortably and please pack up the sunscreen. You don’t want to be hot AND sun burned!

The two main seasons are as follows:

Summer Months of Costa Rica / Dry Season: December -April

Winter Months of Costa Rica / Wetter and Cooler Seasons: May – November.

Honestly, after being here for a couple of seasons straight now, we really love May – September, for a couple of reasons. It’s cooler, the rain has started a bit more often (May – July is generally not full on rain showers, yet) and the colors of the jungle are more vibrant as well as more active and you are most likely able to see the animals in abundance in and around our property. There are generally less crowds / tourists after Easter and it’s just really nice to sleep during rainy season at night.

The only downside is that it is more humid (although great for your skin) and your clothes won’t dry properly (we do have a laundry service if needed) and that you might not get to do ALL the excursions that you had hoped because of the rain. You can play cards with us in the Rancho. Even during rainy season, most mornings here are still bright and beautiful until the clouds start to roll over the mountain (it’s so gorgeous and insane to watch) and then the rain starts up in the late afternoons. So you wake up earlier here anyway, you have a full day and by 2-4pm you are ready to relax and settle in. The rain showers begin to cool everything off from the hard day of play! You are still able to see, most days, our magnificent sunsets while watching the rain drop over the ocean and mountain tops.

So remember the time of year to come visit is really anytime but plan accordingly for those hotter, cooler and wetter months. It’s all magical to me and I would jump at the chance to come at anytime… and I did. That’s why we bought Pacific Edge and moved here full time, as it’s really incredible all year round, even through the hotter / wetter months.

Ok and now time to to cool off… back in the pool!

Pura Vida,

Michaelynn

Travel Insurance & Cancellations

Due to the recent current events in the world we would like to discuss the importance of travel insurance before your vacation here at Pacific Edge Eco Lodge & Villa Pacifica.

We have noticed more cancellations and airline changes in the last few months for our guests worldwide. We understand how frustrating this may be especially when you have planned your trip many months in advance. As much as we can empathize with you all, our cancellation policy is one that we normally can not waiver from. We are a small family run business and this is our bread and butter, so to speak. We do not have the same leniences as the larger establishments and big hotel chains. So for this reason and to protect yourselves from other changes in your travel plans we HIGHLY recommend purchasing travel insurance. We have personally used Trawick insurance for less that $50 per trip. Of course, depending on where you are coming from in the world, you might want to seek out the best insurance in your area. This is separate from the airlines as I have realized most airlines do not cover your accommodations, only flights. We understand how additional costs do add up when making your travel plans but this is one that we consider a non negotiable. We never know what might happen and so its very important to consider paying the additional insurance for everyones peace of mind.

Our cancellation considerations are as follows:

IF you must cancel then please let us know as soon as possible so that we can help rebook your dates. If your booking is 30 days or less we do charge the full booking amount. If your booking is 31 days or more out, we do charge 75% of total booking plus $50 cancellation fee for each room plus a cc processing fee. If we are able to rebook your dates, we will consider waving the service fees but please reach out to discuss prior and to get a cancellation code. We are a small boutique hotel with minimal rooms so we might not be able to rebook your room in that short amount of time but sometimes we do have last minute walk ups. With that being said, it is under our discretion to refund or waive any fees associated with a cancelled booking. No shows/No calls will NOT be waived.

If you are cancelling due to a positive COVID test or illness, please contact us with your insurance policy information, proof of your positive COVID test results and your cancelled flight information. Then we can help guide you to file a claim with your insurance. Cancellation refunds will not be considered unless you provide these documents.

In summary, we will do our very best to accommodate you as we want your vacation to be a highly memorable one, in a positive way, but again, please understand we are a small family run business and this is our livelihood. We do not have the same leniences as the larger establishments and therefore must follow our cancellation policy.

Thank you for your respectful consideration and understanding of our policies. Our best advice to help you is to make sure to purchase travel insurance before your trip! We hope that you do not have to cancel and that we get to meet you all in the very near future!

Whale Watching in the Osa

Whale watching is observed in our area of Costa Rica during 2 seasons. From half July to half November and from half December to April. These seasons are based on the annual migration cycle of the pacific humpback whale. These animals travel from far to visit Marino Ballena in Uvita., coming from the northern hemisphere and those coming from the southern hemisphere, they begin to be seen in the first weeks of July until the end of October, the most common ones to observe are the humpbacks or (yubartas). Known for their long migrations from the north and south sides. Occasionally you can see bryde’s whales and pilot whales. Dolphins are observed throughout the year at 95%, the most common to see on the Pacific coast are bottlenose dolphins commonly known as bufeos and spotted dolphins. The possibilities of observing cetaceans in quite high, but not guaranteed every day since we are not sure of the exact place where they might be.

We can book your Whale Watching and Dolphin tour for you. The tour is of the Marino  Ballena National Marine Park, Whale Island, Three Sisters Rocks, Cavernas Ventanas and the Punta Uvita Tombolo, we visited a natural sanctuary of seabirds as it is Whale Island as we can see resident or migratory birds and some reptiles such as green iguanas and lizards. You can snorkel in the coral reefs of these wilderness areas and appreciate a large number of marine species such as reef fish, crustacean molluscs, Stripes, starfish, snorkeling depends on weather conditions. Its definitely a great tour to check out and our family and guests have enjoyed it immensely.

Things to Do in Dominical

29km (18 miles) SW of San Isidro; 42km (26 miles) S of Quepos; 160km (99 miles) S of San José

With a stunning setting and miles of beaches backed by rainforest-covered mountains, Dominical and the coastline south of it are well worth a visit. They boast spectacular views, remote jungle waterfalls, and everything from abundant budget lodgings to luxurious rainforest villas. The beach at Dominical is one of the prime surf destinations in Costa Rica, with both right and left beach breaks. When the swell is big, the wave here is a powerful and hollow tube, and the town is often packed with surfers. But be careful: It’s often too rough for casual swimmers but you can find excellent swimming, sunbathing, and strolling beaches just a little farther south at DominicalitoPlaya Hermosa, and inside Ballena Marine National Park

You may book directly through us several different excursions. Zipling, Paragliding (not during rainy season) ATV tours through the jungle, horseback riding, kayaking, surf lessons or board rentals, waterfall tours, river tours on the Sierpe, Borucan Indian tours, chocolate tours and more.

IF you are heading this way from Manuel Antonio or Quepos, the road south to Dominical runs by mile after mile of African palm plantations. However, just before Dominical, the mountains again meet the sea. Once you cross over the bridge at the Baru River, the energy seems to change in such a positive way. From Dominical south, the coastline is dotted with tide pools, tiny coves, and cliff-side vistas. Dominical is the largest village in the area and enjoys an enviable location on the banks of Río Barú, right where it widens considerably before emptying into the ocean. The banks of the river and throughout the surrounding forests offer good birding, with numerous shore- and sea birds, including herons, egrets, kingfishers, tanagers, toucans, and trogons.

Here at Pacific Edge you can view a lot of these birds and more in flight above our ocean viewed wrap-around deck as well as many other animals such as the howlers, capuchins and sometimes if you are really lucky, sloths. Book with us today and come enjoy all the Dominical has to offer!

Monkeys, Birds, Geckos and the Creepy Crawlers of the Jungle

“I saw this post in a local hotel owners group recently and I felt it a good read for our fellow guests and those of you looking to stay with us here in the jungles of Costa Rica. We are a unique hotel as we are open aired cabins nestled into the jungle. On any given day you will see howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, toucans, parrots, sloths and ALL sorts of wild life including but not limited to stingless bees, beetles, spiders, cuter ants and geckos! Lots of Geckos! You might find these in your rooms from time to time but trust me you want the geckos as they eat all the other bugs that you might see and frankly, not care too much about. lol

Please don’t freak out or kill these creatures as they are a huge part of our bio diversity and delicate eco system. We do not kill them and we just have to gently move them when WE invade their space. Let me know as I will gladly come to your room to help!

IF you will, please take a couple minutes to read the post below, I think its an important read for those of you on the fence of living in nature with all of these beautiful and sometimes intimidating creatures. You might not love them but I promise they wont bother you if you leave them alone.

To come to Costa Rica is to love the nature, ALL OF IT.

Nature needs insects.

Houses can’t be airtight and it would be silly to throw around insecticidal products all the time.

SO YES, you will sometimes see ants on your walls. Could be a spider or even a scorpion. If its the later, we will remove him and place him back into the jungle for you. 🙂

YES a frog may make a big poo on your terrace.

and YES, wasps will build a beginning of nest wherever they can.

There’s no point in putting less stars for “cleanliness” on your review as this is a part of the authentic Costa Rican experience!

Costa Rica has 5% of the worlds biodiversity so be ready to see a lot of it if that is what you are hoping to see! On the flip side of things, there is a very simple solution if these things do bother you that much: Visit countries where biodiversity has been exterminated… Unfortunately, there are a lot of them. Still beautiful places to visit with less critters running around your rooms.

It does seem that we are witnessing a change in the type of visitors lately in Costa Rica and it would be a shame if we lost the sense of Pura Vida and the love of this beautiful nature by focusing on a certain “STANDARDIZATION” accommodation desired by a certain type of traveller. We are not the typical hotel chain. We are ecologically friendly, as best that we can be. We still want you to have an extraordinary and authentic Costa Rican experience and we do our best to give that to you in a clean and mostly critter free cabins. Just know that it wont be completely bug free and that its ok to not be.

While some areas of the roads are now paved, the unpaved roads and tracks allow you to gain peace of mind. Do not want the “standard” amenities to arrive too quickly because we could lose more than we would gain.

The luxury in this country is above all to be able to observe a monkey from your terrace or to hear the silence only disturbed by the birds. Try to keep that in mind and make it one of the reasons for your stay here.

The luxury is to know that by visiting Costa Rica you participate in the preservation of a rather rare model (although obviously perfectible).

Another point :

YES also sometimes the power goes or the internet jumps and YES sometimes you have to wait a bit before it comes back. Not as much as it used to do but there are never any guarantees. No need to harass your hosts after a 3-minute break… Instead, try to take the opportunity to look up at the trees and their inhabitants. You will see it relaxes and it allows you to put a lot of things into perspective. One of the reasons that we chose to move here. To slow down, put away the electronics, breathe in the cool coastal air and listen to the sounds of the quirky and lively jungle animals.

Pura Vida 🙏

The Gallery At Pacific Edge

We are very excited to announce the re-opening of the Borucan Art Gallery here at Pacific Edge. Susan Atkinson, the original owner of Pacific Edge, has worked with the Borucan Indians for well over 25 plus years. She has a very special relationship with Marina, one of the elders in the village and together they have hand curated an art gallery for those interested in buying Authentic Borucan Masks and woven goods. The proceeds from your purchase help to support the village and the artists that create these imaginative pieces of fine craftsmanship. Now under new ownership, Michaelynn Vandiver, her daughter Kaiya, along with the help of Susan and Marina, have reopened The Gallery.

We are located at Pacific Edge Eco Lodge in Dominicalito, just south of Playa Dominical. The Gallery has a wide collection of only the best detailed carved masks/wall hangings as well as hand-woven, naturally dyed 100% cotton products such as beach bags, tote bags, yoga mat carriers, placemats, table runners, and more. Our Gallery works closely with Marina and the village, being one of the largest buyers since 2015. We have purchased and sold well over 2000 masks and nearly 1500 woven products at a fair trade price. This means that not only do the Borucans get paid directly; the buyer also does not get charged a huge mark-up.

Your purchase here at The Gallery flows right back into the Borucan village. 80% of their income comes from their handcrafted products and we are here to help support them.

Our stock is constantly changing; there are always new products available. If we don’t have what you are looking for please let us know and we can find the right piece for you or have one made with one of our artists. At any one time, there are 25 – 40 unique masks ranging in price from $15 to $225 along with all the woven goods. Each mask is hand signed by the artist and come with a certificate showing their authenticity.

For those of you who are unable to visit us here in Costa Rica, we plan on offering all items from The Gallery for purchase online, here in the near future. So please inquire if you are interested in purchasing from us directly which will continue to support the Borucans and their craft.

Currently we are by appt only, 7 days a week, 10am – 4pm. Please fee free to reach out to us for any questions or for a private viewing. You can call or text us on WhatsApp (US) +1 305-753-6390 or (CR) +1 506 8757 -3612.

Please stop by The Gallery here at Pacific Edge to learn more about our indigenous folklore artwork and to see all of the other wonderful artisan gifts we have for purchase.

We look forward to meeting you!

Covid, Canceling & Insurance

Covid isn’t the most fun topic to write about but it is, unfortunately, a very relevant topic for the world right now. This is something that our family here at Pacific Edge takes very seriously. So we wanted to share with you our cancellation policies and your options if you find your self needing to cancel or postpone your vacation with us here at Pacific Edge.

Currently the Costa Rican government does not allow travelers to fly to Costa Rica without valid travel insurance or being fully vaccinated along with your Covid Vaccine Card. In our opinion even if you have the vaccine we HIGHLY recommend travel insurance in case you do become sick before, during or after your trip.

As we all know emergencies do arise and if this is because of a positive COVID test result please know that we do understand and we have great empathy for you and/or your party. If you do test positive, or are feeling ill before your trip, please let us know at your earliest convenience. This way we can re open your reserved date with our online booking platforms and try to rebook at no cost to you. If you are canceling the day before or on the day of arrival we will still charge the full price for your booking as it is within our standard 7 day no refund policy agreement. Depending on the time that you cancel, we may be able to reimburse you for the full amount of your cancelled reservation but only if we are able to rebook your room. We understand that this can cause a lot of frustration for all involved so this is exactly why we recommend travel insurance. If we are not able to rebook your date(s) you do have the option of filing a claim with your travel insurance in order to be reimbursed for the cost of your booking and all your travel expenses.

If you must cancel please forward us a copy of your insurance policy, proof of the positive COVID test and your cancelled airline information and we can help guide you to file a claim. We do need these documents in order for you to be considered for a refund so please send them as soon as you are able to do so.

When filing a claim with your travel insurance you may be reimbursed for any out of pocket expenses that you may have incurred because of your cancellations. Having travel insurance in place guarantees there will be no losses incurred for either parties. Most of those that we know personally, that have had to use the insurance, have been reimbursed in less than a week. It’s a no brainer, in our opinion. Especially for those unforeseen emergencies, including COVID, when far away from home.

We HIGHLY suggest buying travel insurance EVEN if you are vaccinated. Please reach out to us as soon as you believe you will need to cancel at Email:pacificedgelodge@gmail.com or call us at tel:+13057536390.

As a very small family run business we can not afford the same leniences as the bigger establishments. Therefore we thank you for your respectful consideration and understanding of our policies.

Our cancellation policy is as follows:

Cancelation policy and
Reservations of 1 – 7 days
0 – 30 daysFull charge
31 days$50 service fee for each room
+ CC processing fee
Reservations Easter weekFull charge
Reservations of Nov 20-29th & Dec. 15-Jan 15Full charge

CANCELLATION CONSIDERATIONS: IF we are able to rebook during that time you cancelled, we will consider waving the service fees. We are a small boutique hotel with minimal rooms so we most likely will not be able to rebook your room in that short amount of time. With that being said, it is under our discretion to refund or waive any fees associated with a cancelled booking. No shows/No calls will NOT be waived. Please contact us immediately if you have problems with not making your reservation time slot. If you are cancelling due to a positive COVID test or illness, please contact us with your insurance information, positive COVID test results and we can help to file a claim for you. We will do our best to accommodate you but understand we are a small business and this is our livelihood. We do not have the same leniences as the bigger establishments. So again, thank you for your respectful consideration and understanding of our policies.

We look forward to your booking with us and we hope only the best for your health and safety during your travels.
