History of Pacific Edge Eco Lodge

In 1992, Two sailors, George and Susie, who had been living on the sea for 15 years, put out the anchor and chose Costa Rica as their land based home.  With hardly any roads at that time, the property was found up the mountain on horseback.  They put the first tractor work on what is now known as the Pacific Edge road.  There was only one telephone in all of Dominical/Uvita area. There was no electricity and the nearest hardware store was in San Isidro de General then a hour and half bus trip as they had no car the first year. They designed the 4 cabins and constructed them all at the same time using the locally skillful carpenters, the Montoya’s.  The cabins are made of the hardest of the hardwoods that the termites hate because of the acid taste of the wood.  Chiricano, Manglillo and Nazareno (purple heart) were used, and today can not be bought in lumber yards as this was the choicest of woods to use and the stock has long been depleted.  However, in 1996 they planted all the trees that are on the upper side of the property which are the hardwoods they built with and could be used for future construction.  With no electricity, all the original work was done by hand saw and hammer, having to pre-drill holes for the nails as the wood is so hard.  In 1999 they completed the building of the main house and moved from cabin 2.  In 2006 they started putting extensions on to the cabins enlarging their size and tiling the bathrooms.

In late 2020, after 28 years of running this beautiful jungle getaway, George and Susie passed the torch to us, two other sailors from the Florida Keys and our business partner and best friend, Paul. We reopened Pacific Edge in March 2021 and we live full time on the property, next to the Rancho and closest to Cabin 1.

Having been guests ourselves (since 2008), we have always loved the simplistic natural beauty of the property, along with the intricate detail and eclectic decor that George and Susie constructed when building this harmonious hideaway over all these years. You can tell they built this retreat with lots of love, sweat and tears and I believe you can see a bit of their soul throughout the design.

We have chosen to mostly keep the boho-tranquil vibe AS IS, but we will be adding upgrades where needed. Possibly building a few more cabins below, adding a few of our own details and decor, re-opening both the restaurant & bar for guests, and the Borucan Art gallery that Susie started over 20 years ago. Included in the gallery with be local artwork, jewelry, photography and other local artisan gifts on display.

We are incredibly honored to be able to keep the tradition of Pacific Edge alive for many more years to come. We are also deeply honored to have gotten to know, love and to call both George and Susie, dear friends and family. We hope we continue to honor them and of course, we hope you enjoy your stay as much as we love living here ourselves, on the edge of this Pacific Jungle Paradise.

And in the words of George, “Happy Dayz mate!”
